Welcome to Tomorrow

A look at the changing landscape of our worldPART 1

One of the hardest things to do correctly is to predict the future. It is an interesting exercise but the nature of life on earth is fraught with un-imagined twists and turns. I don’t have a crystal ball but I do pay attention to the ongoing developments in science and technology so I can offer an educated guess. Time will tell if my vision of the future was accurate or not.

AUTOMOBILES:

I grew up in Detroit, Michigan during the Golden Age of the automobile. I feel blessed to have been there to experience the automobile before it morphed into what it is today. it was a real treat for a young boy. Automotive technology has steadily advanced, but the romance of the Golden Age is long gone. Thankfully museums and private collectors like Jay Leno have kept the romance alive.

AUTO REPAIR SHOPS:

As electric vehicles become more and more popular there will be less need for traditional auto repair shops. They will eventually disappear but it will take some time. Even if there is a rapid transition to electric cars, it will likely take about 10 years, maybe more for most of them to go out of business for lack of business. We may not see it happening now but it has already begun, In a couple of years, we will see a rapid departure from what exists now. However, don’t sell your stock in the local mechanic just yet. In 2021 there are not enough alternatives to the current crop of gasoline and diesel-powered cars so this may be one area that has more time on the clock.

Typical gasoline or diesel engines need hundreds of individual parts to function. An electrical motor needs about 20. Some electric cars are already being sold with lifetime guarantees and are currently only repaired by dealers. I am told that an electric motor can be replaced in as little as 10 minutes. That is a big departure from replacing an internal combustion engine which can take a couple of days to a week if it needs a complete rebuild. The electric motor will be a game-changer for the auto industry. There will come a time when faulty electric motors will not even be repaired in the dealership but instead will be sent to a regional repair shop that uses ROBOTS to repair them. Robots and robotic processes are already here and will continue to expand to the point of almost eliminating the need for much human intervention. The combination of robots and AI (Artificial Intelligence) could even become the dominant form of life on the planet. It is anticipated that this scenario could happen as soon as 2050. Some say even sooner, but no matter the date, it will happen. This also raises the question about job opportunities and job security. I delve deeper into that situation in Part 2

If you have a malfunctioning electric motor in your car then time and the ease of repair are on your side. You drive into what looks like a car wash and your car slowly moves through while you have a cup of coffee. In that short time, your car comes out on the other side with a new electric motor or replacement component. This is a great visual, but it will be a few years before this will likely be a daily experience. I imagine that some people might be wondering if such a process will also be available in the future for changing one’s spouse. (Just kidding)

GAS STATIONS

Will a reduced need for combustible fuel stations make them disappear? Yes, but the date for this is very difficult to predict. Nevertheless, at some point gas stations as we know them will go the way of the buggy whip.

The advent of the electric car demands plentiful electric charging stations. Governments and private companies will install electrical recharging stations. This has already started in many developed countries. No doubt you have already seen some of these locations. The 500-pound gorilla in the room on this one is the electricity has to come from someplace. The debate rages on as to how that will be handled.

Tesla is just the tip of the spear. The move to electric cars is well underway. Major auto manufacturers have already invested in new plants that will ONLY build electric cars. Additional information can be found here: https://science.sciencemag.org/content/366/6464/422

A baby born today will likely only see “personal cars” in museums. I have not owned a car for over 30 years now. I was able to transition away from owning a car because of where I live. As a person that at one time had a love affair with cars, I found the transition a bit difficult. However, my main motivation was to force myself to walk a lot to mitigate the effects of my type II diabetes. It worked. My lifestyle proves that for some people a car is an option, but for others, probably most people, having a car is an absolute must. I use Uber taxis, and a few times a year I rent a car. My yearly transportation costs are a fraction of what most people with a car are paying. Consider the following:

The cost of the Car…
Insurance…
Licensing…
Tires…
Parking fees…
Gasoline… (unless it is electric)
Oil Changes… (unless it is electric)

The Utopian plan is telling us that The big difference between 2021 and 2025 is that by 2025 there might not be a need for human drivers. I don’t necessarily believe that (yet,) but I do believe that in 2025 the trend will be toward autonomous cars. I would bet cold hard cash on that coming to pass. Pride of ownership aside, the reality is that self-driving cars and taxis will alter the age of the personally-owned automobile.

AUTONOMOUS CARS:

In a few years, the entire auto industry will be disrupted. 2018 brought forth the first self-driving cars. 2021 promises sufficient advancements to start making the technology mainstream, but some folks disagree. Nevertheless, once reliable self-driving becomes a proven technology you might not want to own a car anymore. You will do what I do now. You will call for a car with your phone and it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination. You will pay only for the distance driven. No need to pay to park it. Right now my taxis do have a human driver, but likely, children born in 2021 and beyond will never get a driver’s license and never even own a car. This will change the landscape of our cities because the reduced need for private cars will also reduce the need for parking spaces. Some people are already suggesting those unneeded parking lots will be turned back into green areas. That sounds great, but I am wondering about the psychological effect of not owning a car. For some, it could be like trying to break an addiction.

AUTO INSURANCE

Worldwide about 1.2 million people die each year in car accidents. That includes a high percentage of drunk drivers. Currently, there is one accident per every 60,000 miles driven. However, it is anticipated that with autonomous driving that will drop to one accident in about 6 million miles. That alone will save million-plus lives each year and it will have a clear effect on Insurance companies as well. Without accidents, the cost of insurance will become cheaper. The current automobile insurance business model will eventually disappear. Some auto insurance companies will likely cease to exist once the transition to autonomous driving is well underway.

THE ELECTRIC CAR IS HERE NOW

Volvo is now producing hybrid cars and in the not-too-distant future, they intend to phase out the hybrid models and go completely electric. https://www.volvocars.com/en-th/news-and-event/volvo-presents-my-2021-line Volkswagen and Audi also are well aware of Tesla’s success and what it is doing to the auto market. All the major US. companies are now offering electric vehicles as well. Ford, GM, and Chrysler are well into the transition to electric cars. Once Tesla showed there was a market everyone else followed.

Say goodbye to OPEC

The Middle East is in trouble! The middle east is ALWAYS in trouble. Oil is king right now but it is becoming an endangered species. The question is how long will it take to be phased out completely. The current occupant of the White House in the USA has been tasked to try to save the worldwide oil industry, but nobody can hold back the tide. However, if we are going to transition to electric cars then the electricity needed to support that Utopian Dream must be generated from some source. Maybe it is not time to sell your oil, gas, or coal stocks just yet, but that day is eventually coming.

SOLAR

With solar power, homes can produce and store more electrical energy during the day than they use. The excess production can be sold back to the grid which can then dispense it to industries that are high electricity users. I have not seen the statistics on this but I imagine that worldwide thousands of houses are already doing just that. Fossil energy companies have at times tried to limit that access to the grid to prevent competition from home solar installations, but that simply cannot continue, and it should not. Technology will dictate a new paradigm in the not-too-distant future.

Solar energy conversion has been happening for years. Every passing year brings significant improvements. Elon Musk came out with something called “The Tesla roof?” A good concept but the original did not go as planned. Nonetheless, the combined initiatives of the industry are rapidly gaining traction. https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/26/22404639/elon-musk-tesla-solar-roof-mistakes-cost-price-increase

In general, the concept of a one hundred percent solar-powered world is possible. Technically that situation would produce the electrical output that the dreamers envision, but the cost and the other realities of getting there will place this well into a future that might never materialize. Many people reading this will probably be dead or very old before it becomes a reality. Will solar work? Yes, but only if a significant number of private homes and businesses use it.

The FUTURE is approaching faster than most of us can handle. If you have a differing view of the future then I presented here then please share it with me.

— END PART 1—

Thoughts on the Weather

I live in the mountains of Central America at 4000-feet above sea level. That is just slightly below the level of the clouds, so when a rainstorm passes as it does every day now, the thunder is very loud. It rattles the rafters in the house and the fillings in my teeth. I do enjoy a few loud thunderclaps, but my wife and the cat do not. As I write this, I can see a furry tail sticking out from under the bed.

In Central America, December to April is called “summer.” It does not rain in summer. There is no defined spring, or autumn, just summer, which is hot and dry, or winter, which is hot and wet. The winter I knew it when I lived in Michigan was very different. The two seasons here are MUD or DUST. April to November is known as “The Rainy Season. ” What we call the rainy season does not denote a monsoon season, but there are years that might challenge that assessment.

This year is a very wet winter on the isthmus. The daily rain stands in stark contrast to the North American west that is bone dry and on fire. Our forests here are so wet they couldn’t burn if you tried to light them on fire with a military-grade flame thrower.

Something missing. Strictly speaking, the inhabitants of planet earth, as in you and me, cannot control the weather any more than our prehistoric cousins could, but it goes beyond weather. According to Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev, the earth is a Type Zero civilization. His chart defines a civilization’s level of technological advancement based on how they are able to control energy. Here are the three types:

A Type I civilization, also called a planetary civilization—can use and store all the energy available on its planet.

A Type II civilization also called a stellar civilization—can use and control energy at the scale of its planetary system.

A Type III civilization also called a galactic civilization—can control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy.

We can dispense with the Type II and Type III civilizations right away, but why are we not even a Type I planetary civilization? It is embarrassing to realize that in 2020 we have not even made the first category.

Some insist that we can control the weather, but that technology, if it really exists must be in the hands of an evil cabal that wants to destroy the world by creating hurricanes, droughts, floods, and other such events. I scarcely know how to respond to that, so I will put that notion aside for now. My stance is that if we had the technology that, in my humble opinion we should have, California would not be on fire, and there would not be any flooding in Central America. Should you have some information about weather control, please send it to me at jim@jimsayers.com or enter it in the Leave a Reply box below.

If we look closely at the history of the planet we see that over the centuries, there were times of both hot and cold periods. The record is clear that over millions of years, ice ages alternated with much warmer climate conditions. However, the previous 12,000 years show a dramatic change in the earth’s climate.

Climate and weather are related, but they are not the same. On a given day a location could be very hot, while elsewhere on the same day a different location is very cold. When we try to use weather as a way to judge climate we end up like the participants in the story of the five blind men examining the Elephant. Each example is correct, but nobody has addressed the entire issue.

Among the worldwide issues, the climate debate has been center stage for years. Only the Coronavirus has moved it from the spotlight. There does seem to be Global Warming taking place, but there is also evidence for Global Cooling. Both opposing points of view have credible scientific spokespersons, so like the heavy rain outside my window, the climate debate also rages on. People tend to line up on one side or another and go to great lengths to defend their position.

My reason for posting this is not to engage in the Global Warming debate but rather to draw attention to the sorry state of our lack of technological development regarding the ability to control the weather. Year after year I watch California go up in flames while rain is abundant here. In my opinion that is a very sad situation.

I am a technology junkie, but I find it confusing when people tell me that technologically speaking, we are a highly advanced civilization when it is clearly evident that we have no more control over the weather than our ancestors did. I would like to live long enough to see that situation change.

I will say more about this , but now if you will excuse me, I must go comfort the cat.

The world according to Elon Musk

Elon Musk seems to be more than one person. Somehow he has time to run an automobile company, a rocket ship company, a battery company, and now he is interested in modifying human beings. His stated motivation for this is because he believes Artificial Intelligence is a dangerous technology. I happen to agree with him about that. He has finally acknowledged that there is simply no way to stop the advancement of AI technology. Consequently, he has determined that if we can’t stop the advance of AI, we must join it on our terms. I am not sure how I feel about that, but for now, his outside-of-the-box thinking has earned him a special place on my website.

The brain implant technology is interesting, it is also scary. Some say that it smacks of the biblical Mark of the Beast. Of course, There Is no need to decide today whether you will get your chip, but I think that it is fair to say that at some point this technology will be approved, and join the other plans for marking and tracking humans. However, if Elon is to be believed then this might be more a case of salvation, than of condemnation. Time will tell.

Newsletter 08-27-2020

This is my first online newsletter of 2020 via my website. It might also be my last online newsletter, but that will be determined by the success of this one.

Note: I considered the newsletter format to not be effective so this is (was) my one and only newsletter. My public contact is now via my website.

For me, time seems to be moving faster than it did years ago, but I think that it might just seem that way to me because the older I get the slower I move. LOL Last week, I sprained my back, so this week I am moving even slower than usual. The good news is that with so many activities closed due to the pandemic, I have no need to go anywhere, so now I am always on time. Many people feel the need to blow off some steam, and one of our volcanoes just showed us how to do that. I live 22.5 miles from the closest volcano, so only the very fine ash ever gets this far. That used to be a problem, but no more because we are all wearing masks now anyway. <he-he>

When the world went into lock-down I started getting about 60 to 80 emails a day from the army of bored stay-at-home captives. I finally called time out. Using the power of my email client, Thunderbird, I very quickly and easily brought that situation under control. Each day seems longer now, and I clearly have a much easier time keeping up with the emails that deserve my attention. Weeeeeeee! Buy the way, because I use Thunderbird, as can you, I manage my seven email accounts easier than people with only one account who use the traditional email links to Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail (MSM), etc. Bless you, Thunderbird. (It’s free)

On my website, I am presenting a series on asteroids leading up to the day that I will disclose the privileged information that I was given when I was with some professional astronomers. For now, what I am writing about concerning asteroids is simply background information. You can read my latest post at: http://www.jimsayers.com/wp/log/blog-history/. Click on Deep Impact.  Also, go to the main menu and click on Technology to read more of what I wrote concerning asteroids.

There is so much happening right now that it is almost impossible to keep up with the daily glut of breaking news. I imagine that by now most people understand that the virus is just part of a larger plan that is unfolding on a global scale. All of us must reevaluate what to do to adjust to the evolving situation. Up to a point, it is a personal issue, but there is no escaping what is happening worldwide. There are far too many overall implications to assimilate, so one’s focus on long-term survival should the biological matter hits the fan. It matters not what you believe to be true, or not true, but I hear about people who are denying the reality that now grips the world. I am sorry to learn that some people do not get it. I can’t change that, but I will do what I can to pass along accurate information. The follow-up is on the reader of same.

On my website, I present what comes into my world. I pass along what I feel is useful or important. That information should be useful, but it will likely lead to other web links that will lead to yet other useful web links, etc. Much of what you need to know is already on the Internet. However, there is a concerted effort to purge, or suppress the truth, because it is in the interest of some very powerful people with a specific agenda to control the narrative. Especially the great god Google and the wholly compromised people who now run that organization. A few years ago Google crossed over to the Dark Side, and that has become an increasingly big problem for freedom-loving people everywhere.

TV news is a joke. We now live in the age of fake, and/or closely controlled TV and traditional print news. Some news outlets do try to tell the truth as they know it, but often even they do not present all of the important news. The consumer of the sanitized news just never gets exposed to issues that really matter. Thankfully, the real issues can be found elsewhere, and the best elsewhere is known as the Internet. The Internet, at least as it exists now, is the best source of information, but to ferret out the truth takes an effort, and some knowledge of how to do it. Consequently, most people would rather just turn on the TV and hope for the best. I personally like Gilligan’s Island reruns the best.

UPDATE: I planned to create a monthly email newsletter, but the world is moving too fast for a single monthly newsletter. My daily posts are a better way to help you stay informed. Moreover, links like this one https://youtu.be/sA_9X70XRoI?t=123 are censored as quickly as YouTube finds them. If you click on it now you will get an interesting message that proves my point about censorship. It was clearly a Walk on the Wild Side, but now there is no way to watch it. It worked when I sent out the newsletter last August. I sent it with the admonition that you watch it quickly before the Google Censors got busy. It was especially interesting to anyone living in Canada.

I make no claim to the validity of the information presented on any third-party website or video that I mention nor do I take any responsibility for the contents. The content thereof is strictly the domain of the person or company that owns it. I do however encourage everyone to do as I do when I encounter something of significant importance. I download it to my computer then seek independent verification. That is pretty easy to do on the Internet.

My newsletters have gone the way of buggy whips, high button shoes, my hair, and Dodo Birds. Everything that I find interesting will now be in my blogs.

Deep Impact

Except for when I saw the movie “Deep Impact,” I have never been scared by the thought of an asteroid strike, so why do I write so much about them? The short answer is that I have been interested in asteroids, comets, and meteors since I was a kid, but a better answer is that in 2019 I had a briefing from some professional astronomers that renewed my interest in asteroids, and what might be headed our way. What they told me seemed to have an air of urgency to it, and now given the apparent up-tick in asteroid activity by the media, and a seemingly greater public interest in asteroids, it appears as if I might have been given some relevant information. The part that really interests me is the recent increasing interest in asteroids by the world scientific community. The reaction coming from many quarters seems to indicate that something is afoot.

The following is from 2016
What would we do if we discovered a large asteroid on course to impact Earth? While highly unlikely, that was the high-consequence scenario discussed by attendees at an Oct. 25 NASA-FEMA tabletop exercise in El Segundo, California.

“While highly unlikely” is an interesting choice of words, but that sentiment is not the prevailing wisdom these days. They are from a conference back in 2016, and in my opinion, seem to be designed more to make all of us feel warm and fuzzy, but is that realistic?

The scientific community is aware that asteroids and other big space “rocks” pose a potential problem for the planet. In 2020, there was great concern about what might be headed our way. The average person must deal with the coronavirus, so awareness of the news regarding an asteroid on a potential collision course with the planet is probably not uppermost on their mind. News of the 2 asteroids that just missed us a while back is disconcerting because the encounter took us by surprise. Nevertheless, it is worthy of our attention. Moreover, the increase in the frequency of asteroid close encounter reports and the renewed interest in what’s going on near the planet are noteworthy.

If one looks for information about potential asteroid encounters one can find a number of potential candidates on the Internet. Much has been written about the asteroid called Apophis. CLICK HERE to read about the Friday the 13th near approach of that bad boy. Did I mention it is scheduled for April 2029, almost a decade away from now? I will check my calendar tonight to see if I will be available to watch it go by. In the meantime, we need to know what is happening right now regarding near-earth asteroids?

I have a personal rule of living that states: If an event is more than five years away then I do not care to know about it, so when we get to 2024 I will start thinking about Apophis. Even then it will be just for fun.

In my school daze, I had a science teacher that made a point of telling the class that in one billion years or so, the sun will run out of solar fuel and the earth will be doomed. Wow, alert the media, and by the way, what’s for lunch? Why does anyone care about events 1000 years from now let alone a billion years? Has there been a dramatic change in life expectancy and I missed the memo? Meanwhile, back in 2020…

The incidents of near-earth asteroid passings appear to be more frequent now or maybe the detection is getting better. It also could be in part due to the Internet and other modern communications methods getting the word out. Accurate records of asteroid activity are kept by the people and agencies responsible for tracking them. Those data would reveal if there is a recent increase in asteroid activity and/or a recent increase of asteroid close encounters. Astronomers and other people who watch the skies for a living are in a position to know the level of risk. I wonder if they are holding back information from the public?

The European Space Agency (ESA) reports:

such intense levels of international scientific collaboration are driven in part by the fact that an asteroid impact could cause devastating effects on Earth. This is a testament to the fact that we are at a point in human history where we are considering that we should do something about risky asteroids.

According to recent ESA estimates, there are 878 asteroids in the ‘risk list’. The ESA catalog brings together all asteroids we know of that have a ‘non-zero’ chance of impacting Earth in the next 100 years. Non-zero means that an impact, however unlikely, cannot be ruled out.

What are the odds that there is something out there that has yet to be discovered? Something that for a number of reasons has not yet shown its crater-pocked face. Something that is not yet seen by the astronomical community at large. Not possible you say, well we just missed one not long ago and it made the closest approach to Earth of any asteroid known to our scientific community. Even the asteroid hunters admit that blew it, but in fairness, they are doing a remarkable job with the resources they have available to them.

Several near-earth asteroid passes are slated for the rest of 2020. We are told that only a very few could possibly collide with earth, and more are being reported as “big.” By virtue of the timing, the most famous one is the election day asteroid. The scientific community is in agreement that it is very small and poses no significant problem unless of course, it hits your polling place on November 2nd. (Wow…we dodged the bullet!)

I will continue to post significant asteroid updates in my blogs, and as the situation warrants it, present timely updates on any asteroid activity that might affect us. In a future post, I will also share the bombshell information that I received during my face-to-face meeting in 2019 with some professional astronomers. In the meantime, look at the night sky as often as you can and enjoy the majesty of the universe.

The Coronavirus

There is now some evidence that the Coronavirus was created specifically to alter human DNA. Can that really be true?

Whenever we are faced with dramatic news of any kind there is a tendency for some to dismiss it, and often label it a “*conspiracy theory.” This is usually because it is too far out of their comfort, or knowledge zone. Others will embrace it no matter how “far out” it might be. Still others will do some research before they reach a conclusion in their own mind. I place myself in the latter group.

The virus has clearly altered life on the planet. Not just with respect to our health and well-being, but apparently the planet is being socially re-engineered. Is this a conspiracy theory, or a true conspiracy? Evidence is mounting that it is a true conspiracy, and that is both scary and sad.

The biggest piece of evidence that a true conspiracy exists today is the fact that the big powerful Internet companies are scrambling to suppress any information about the virus, and related subjects that go counter to what the global conspirators want known about their agenda. Thankfully, the truth is still being shared outside their influence. Nevertheless, it is just a matter of time before their billions, or maybe trillions of dollars will find a way to further stifle the truth about their master plan. Do you think that notion is itself a conspiracy theory? If you do then you have not been privy to the hard evidence that exists which indicates that someone, or some group just does not want the truth to emerge.

There is a long list of articles, websites, and video presentations that contain facts which clearly show that the virus, and the attendant disruption to our lives is not an accident. An ever increasing number of highly trained, board certified, and well respected doctors are being censored for bringing forth uncomfortable facts about the virus, its prevention, and its cure. Why is that? Who benefits if the truth is suppressed? If you can answer that question then you will know who is behind the conspiracy. It is written: “To find out who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.”

The notion that the earth is overpopulated has been around for many years. Since the early 20th century much has been written about the issue, and in recent years the dire warnings are getting louder. I did a quick web search to locate an appropriate link to overpopulation information. Instantly I was presented an avalanche of information that made my eyes glaze over. What is interesting is, no matter how I phrased my search criteria, the name Bill Gates kept popping up. Why is that? Well, it seems that Bill has become the poster boy for some of the evil things that are happening in the world right now. However, only verifiable facts can prove his culpability, or remove him from the conspiracy merry-go-round. Time will clearly reveal the final chapter on this one.

At some point a conspiracy theory either turns into a real conspiracy, or is proven to be without merit. At that point, some people will simply move on to the next conspiracy theory conveniently waiting in the wings. For some people the facts just do not matter. They have their minds made up, and that’s, that. Here’s a test for you. Try saying the word conspiracy with out following it with the word “theory.” That might give you a clue as to how you process information. As for me, I simply put on my tin foil hat and search the web for the truth. After all, if it is on the Internet it must be true—or not?

If you were able to find your way here to read my commentary, you no doubt know how to do a web search for information. All the same, I have included a list of some interesting links to the world population issue. They are important because there really is a movement to reduce the population of the planet to a point where we can realistically feed and otherwise support all life on the planet, including the animals.

My personal belief is that if we do not grow too fast, we can support the people. That brings me back to what I said in the beginning of this presentation. When a technology is applied correctly it can greatly benefit humankind. We can make the deserts bloom, and tame the vast areas of wilderness, but that comes with a hefty price tag, and begs the question—who will pay the price. I also give credence to the opposing point of view that says we simply have too many people using dwindling resources.

Maybe seriously curtailing new population growth is the answer. The alternative too reducing population by managing future growth is not pretty. As far as the virus is concerned, it is by accident or by design, culling the heard. If it is by design they the designers must be unmasked, no pun intended. Statistics reveal that the vast majority of deaths attributed to the virus are among the elderly and infirm. Is that just a coincidence? Are we all watching a strange and deadly experiment play out before our eyes? I don’t claim to know, but I do know that looking at the facts will reveal the truth.

It is not possible to speak about the virus and not inject worldwide population growth into the discussion. They seem to be two unrelated topic, but are they really. Just take a step back and look at the big picture, and don’t forget to wear your mask. They are watching you. LOL

When technology is applied correctly it can greatly benefit humankind, but when it is not, the results can be a disaster, as we have recently seen with the virus.

Website Revival

I had a great idea to create a website that would present fun, interesting, and educational information, so in 2016 my friend Buddy, and I created The Jim Sayers Experience. That was great, but between traveling and dealing with health issues, my idea got placed on the back burner. Now that we are living in 2020 AC (2020 After Covid-19) I now have time to resume course, but along with the rest of the world, the Internet has changed, and the smartphone has also created a new universe for all of us. The old Paradigm just does not have the value that it once had. What in the world is going on?

Have reached critical mass with the Internet?

If you spend every waking on the net, you will never even see 1% of what might interest you. Are you old enough to remember when a company was just worried about competing with a competitor on the internet for potential prospects? Those days are ancient history. Now the entire Internet, and its little brother the smartphone are the single biggest distractions in our lives, many websites and videos are now competing for your time, and your money.

What now?

Does it seem as if you are on a freight train speeding down a grade toward a steep curve in the tracks. If our pace of life does not slow down then we will for sure jump the tracks, or has that already happened? Does anyone know how the Covid-19 Catastrophe will end? I sure don’t, but from what I am seeing it will not likely end well. Even my cat is concerned!

Covid Corridor

I do not wish to go down the Covid-19 Corridor. There are already 8,236 websites doing that. My point is that life as we know it, or have known it, is over. Wow, did I just say that? Well if that’s true, then what is the replacement Paradigm?

I don’t know what happens now, but I will keep feeding my website, and keep trying to be a positive place for people. That is not easy, and maybe the things that interest me might not interest you. I will soon find out. In the meantime, I would like to hear what interests you. That’s a more important issue. How has Covid-19 affected you? Do you have any ideas as to how we get out of this mess?

The Telescopes of Mt. Graham – Part 1

The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT)

There are many powerful telescopes on the planet and an increasing number of telescopes in orbit. I have been interested in telescopes and astronomy since I was a kid growing up in Detroit and over the years I have attempted to keep up with the never-ending discoveries being made in astronomy. One day I read about a telescope known as the Large Binocular Telescope located at the top of Mt. Graham in Arizona. I was instantly fascinated with it and I just had to see it in person.

I am not exactly sure of the date, but I remember that my discovery came from the internet. Once I learned what it was, and what it did, I knew that I had to visit this big window to the stars and see it in person. Was it the telescope, or was the mission that most interested me? It turns out that it was both so in 2018 I decided I would go to Arizona to get up close and personal with this special window to the universe. However, getting there was not as easy as it should have been.

What should have been a simple journey up Mt. Graham was not. In 2017 I was ready to go, but thanks to “mother nature,” my first two attempts failed. The first attempt was thwarted by a forest fire on the mountain that almost destroyed the telescopes. My second attempt was thwarted by water. The heavy seasonal “monsoon rains” in Arizona washed out parts of the road to the top of Mt. Graham ending the public trips for the rest of the season. The forest fire destroyed the trees and vegetation that would normally mitigate the effects of the rainwater and the resulting water damage to the road from the rains closed the mountain to the public. I was forced to wait yet another year for my visit.

In September of 2019, my quest to visit the telescopes on Mt. Graham became a reality. I finally made it to the top of Mt. Graham and it was a magic moment. I was able to get up close and personal with all the telescopes and I also saw firsthand the danger the forest fire presented to the telescopes and just how close it came to destroying the mountain top complex.

Fire and water notwithstanding our guide, John Ratje, pointed out that the real challenge of getting to the complex is in the winter when sometimes five or more feet of snow can cover the road. I live in the tropics, so it is extremely unlikely that I will ever have the joy of that experience.

When there is no snow, no fire, and no floods, getting to the top of Mt. Graham is very easy. The Eastern Arizona College Discovery Park Campus is the agency that provides public tours. They operate a multi-passenger van that takes the tour participants to the telescope complex at 10,000-feet. However, before one can climb aboard the van there is a briefing and a short video presentation to describe the tour and to inform each participant what is expected of them.

After the video, each participant is required to read and sign two documents. The first one is a standard release form to hold harmless The Eastern Arizona College Discovery Park Campus in case of an accident, altitude sickness, or an alien abduction while roaming around the mountain top compound. The observatories are located 10,000 feet above sea level, so it is a legitimate concern that some folks might be negatively affected by the altitude. It does happen sometimes. If one were coming from a sea-level community, then I can understand there might be a reason for concern. I am on the far side of 70-years-old, but for the past 25 years, I have lived at or near 5,000-feet, so I knew that I was somewhat acclimated to the 10,000-foot altitude, and as it turned out I didn’t even notice the altitude. Each participant also had to affirm that they were not suffering from any of the health problems listed in the document. I was sure none of the items on the list applied to me, especially the one about being pregnant.

The second document was to make us aware of the Red Squirrel population that inhabits the area. The squirrels are an endangered species protected by federal law. Their habitat is marked by yellow tape similar to the tape used by the police to mark the boundaries of a crime scene. Each tour participant had to warrant that they would not disturb, harass, or otherwise interact with the little critters because to do so is a federal offense and they were not kidding.

My trip was to visit telescopes so it seemed strange to focus on Red Squirrels, but the legal ramifications of disrespecting their habitat are quite serious. We needed to understand that there were consequences associated with transgressing their area. To cross the yellow tape that marks the boundary to their habitat would invite problems. Their piece of the mountain was the first thing we were shown upon our arrival at the telescope community.

Before I leave this topic, I feel compelled to say that, at no point did I ever see a red squirrel. That was okay because I came to see telescopes, not interact with the cute red squirrel population. However, I make wildlife videos in Central America so all wild animals are of interest to me.

The trip to the telescopes starts at the Discovery Park Campus in Safford, Arizona. It takes about an hour and a half to get to the telescopes but that includes the 30-minute lunch break. About 20 minutes after departure, the van is headed up the mountain. The many switch-backs and curves present marvelous views, and dramatic photo opportunities of the valley below, but the last eight miles of the trip is the real adventure. It is on a dirt and gravel road that seems best suited as a vehicle shock absorber test track. Along the way, the acres of burned trees from the forest fire give the area a foreboding look, not unlike the dark forest in the Wizard of Oz. On the trip up we stop at a nice campground to eat lunch. It is included as part of the tour. The food was welcomed, but the break from the bumpy road was also appreciated. The area is wild and I was hoping to see a bear. Sadly that never happened, but I did get some nice video of a beautiful deer.

The trip from the picnic spot to the top was quick. The final mile or so is on a single-lane road that requires radio contact with the top of Mt. Graham to ensure that there is no downhill traffic. It would not work well for two vehicles to confront one another on the narrow one-lane road. Lester. our driver used his two-way radio to call “Moon Base.” Say what? I thought we were headed to a mountain top. Just how high are we going? After three attempts at calling “Moon Base,” there was no response. We had to move on so Lester broadcast our intentions over the radio and we started up the hill. In less than 10 minutes we were there. We came around a curve, and there it was. I was looking right at the giant structure that houses the Large Binocular Telescope. After two failed attempts I had finally made it. I am sure that I was grinning from ear to ear.
